The Backstory of the Halfmoon Podcast

Back in May 2025, during our NAAS Community’s annual five-day retreat at the Omega Institute, Patsy (former wife, now my work partner) spontaneously opened each session with a traditional Taoist folk tale. Her inimitable storytelling style charmed everyone present, including me. After her tale, I spoke from the energy of the story — because these stories encode profound insights that cannot be reduced to an “explanation,” but can be amplified and worked with.

Patsy and I have decided to continue this collaboration and make it publicly available as a podcast. She will tell the story, then I will offer comments on it and connect it to current events and practical life issues. Then I segue into what sounds like a “guided meditation” but is really more of an improvisational trance state drawing on imagery from the story and serving its purpose to change consciousness.

Patsy learned the stories as a child in Taiwan, where she grew up on the brink of that country’s transition to modernity. She relates to them from an intuitive understanding that a child can access better than a scholar of folklore. These stories are treasures, carrying wisdom from another time, place, and culture to a world that needs them now more than ever.
